LSB-SSS: Support Staff Series

LSB-SS001Shelving and paging library material- 01
Shelving is vital to Libraries, and yet shelfers  often receive little in the way of recognition from the upper ranks of management, we all know that if the army of people who sort or put away materials did not come in and do their jobs, the effect would be felt immediately throughout the library. In spite of their importance, it is not unusual to hear shelving staff referred to as a vaguely troublesome bunch whose main claim to fame is their high rate of turnover.  We will all benefit if more attention is paid to the way these essential workers are selected and trained.
This module is based on the inside story of putting organization in the library material. Putting those basements and stacks in order, under control and accessible will make finding a needle in the hay stack  a zap with training a non library staff to make the library work easier and faster. What will an online catalog do if the book placement does not translate the location on the shelf?
Duration:        Lecture and practice 10 hours in 5 days.
Real life Practical exercise ; sorting, transporting and shelving. 2 hours.
Seats Available; Ten

LSB -002: Physical Processing, Preparing library material for use.
Description; Standard Operating procedure for complete putting identifying stamps, functional data, bar-codes and labels on the hard copy cooks, maps, documents and institutional archives not only makes material management, tracking and paging fast, but also ensures placement of identification marks in places where the data can be looked / found and captured with ease and efficiency, increasing the speed and accuracy of management, use and access.
Putting functional stationary and labels where they belong, ensuring standard size of the identification stationary and creating the required labels makes this an independent library functionality module usual absent in many library systems. With little reading and writing ability and training the library support staff can easily become a partner with professional librarians to meet the challenges of high volume routine materials handling in a large library.
